SACRAMENTO -- Today, the Bureau of Cannabis Control (Bureau) announced that California had become the newest member of The Cannabis Regulators Association. This non-partisan organization was created to promote information sharing among state regulators, create more uniformity across state frameworks, and assist federal, state, and local jurisdictions that have approved or are considering legalizing cannabis.
CANNRA was established in November 2020. It includes the state regulatory agencies and officials responsible for overseeing their state's adult-use and medicinal cannabis.
"CANNRA was created to allow regulators from across the country to exchange their experiences and best practices," stated Acting Bureau Chief Tamara Colson, who Governor Gavin Newsom designated as California's voting member. "I look forward to this opportunity to promote California's cooperation with regulators across the country."
CANNRA is not an advocacy organization, but CANNRA aims to give policymakers objective information to help them make informed decisions about legalizing and regulating cannabis.
This organization strives to achieve the following:
- To promote the adoption of effective and equitable state/territorial cannabis laws. The goals are to prevent the distribution of cannabis and to prevent the diversion of cannabis into states/territories that do not allow it, to stop the criminal enterprise and activities related to cannabis businesses, to prevent drugged driving, to protect worker and consumer health, and to protect the environment.
- To promote and devise methods that best enforce the cannabis laws and regulations in each jurisdiction.
- - To work towards the adoption of uniform laws and regulations, as well as best practices, where practicable.
- Facilitate information exchange between industry stakeholders and regulatory authorities.
- To provide information to elected officials or policymakers in jurisdictions that might be considering legalizing cannabis and to adopt new regulations for it.
- - To strive for harmony among the various states and territories in the administration of cannabis laws and regulations.
